AEW wrestler QT Marshall recently spoke with The Metro about his experience facing CM Punk on an episode of AEW Dynamite in November 2021. The match, which took place in Punk’s hometown of Chicago, was a memorable moment for Marshall, who shared insights into their preparation and in-ring chemistry.
A Trust-Filled Match with Minimal Communication
Marshall revealed that Punk specifically wanted to work with a heel wrestler in his hometown, leading to their pairing. Despite minimal communication before the match, they delivered a classic wrestling bout.
“He just wanted to work a bad guy in his hometown. We really didn’t communicate too much before the match, and we just went out there and had a good old wrestling match,” Marshall explained.
Marshall also acknowledged Punk’s well-documented trust issues in AEW, noting that their lack of personal friendship didn’t hinder their professional collaboration.
“Him and I were never friends, but at the same time, I knew what my goal was and what his goal was for that night, and I just had a great time with it,” he added.
Years of Studying Punk Paid Off
Having studied CM Punk’s matches for over a decade, Marshall felt prepared for the encounter.
“I’ve been watching CM Punk matches for 10 years, 15 years, and he really doesn’t change what he does. So it kind of helped out a lot as well,” Marshall shared.
The AEW star also took pride in being trusted to perform at a high level on live television.
“Having the trust to go out there on live TV with somebody like that at such a high level, to just know that, ‘Hey, that’s your job,’ I do take pride in that.”
Punk’s Legacy and Departure
Marshall’s comments provide a glimpse into Punk’s approach during his AEW tenure, as well as his reputation as a meticulous performer. While Punk’s eventual departure from AEW was tumultuous, moments like this highlight his dedication to the craft of wrestling.
